Guyana, Suriname, and French Guiana once were collectively known as the Guianas, a territory that also comprised areas of modernday Venezuela and Brazil. They are an oddity in the America's. They're not latino, they don't speak Spanish or Portuguese, and they have a highly diverse population.

But they also inherited a messy network of disputed borders from their colonial past, and tensions are increasing now that Venezuela is claiming large parts of Guyana's territory, and are building up their military presence in the region.
