Surprisingly, the White Swiss Shepherd was originally bred in Germany. Its progenitors were German Shepherds of a rare species that were white in color. It was first seen at the Hanoverian dog show in 1822. It was a white male named Greif.

The offspring of Greif is long involved in the breeding of this breed in Germany until the 30s of the 20th century. The aim of the breeders was to breed a working dog with ideal qualities and characteristics.

After the rise of the Nazis to power "white shepherds" fell into disfavor and were culled. Breeding work continued in the USA and Canada. The breed was registered in these countries in the 60s of the 20th century, and it was called the "AmericanCanadian White Sheepdog. In the 70s, these dogs were first introduced to Switzerland, which continued breeding. It worked to improve the characteristics of the species, both externally and psychoemotionally, as well as intellectually.

The breed was registered in the Swiss Breed Book in 1991 and was recognized by the Federation Cynologique Internationale (FCI) in 2003, at which time it became known as the White Swiss Shepherd.
