We’re so excited that you just earned your permit certificate! We know you’re ready to get to the DPS to get your official permit so you can start driving, but first we need to make sure you have all the paperwork that the DPS requires. We're here to make sure your first trip to get your permit is the only one you have to make!

Make sure you have your PTDE Program Guide from the Texas Department of License and Regulation on hand. You only need two forms from this guide: the receipt (proof of purchase) and the Texas Residency Affidavit.

From Aceable, have your permit certificate (DE964), Classroom Instruction Log, and Verification of Enrollment (VOE). Obtain the VOE from your high school administrator, as it expires in 30 days. Bring proof of Identity and Lawful Presence documents, such as your original Social Security Card. If you lack an unexpired Texas ID, US Passport, or US Citizenship Certificate, bring your original birth certificate along with your social security card and an additional document validating your identity.

For Texas Residency, your parent or guardian will fill out the Texas Residency Affidavit, accompanied by documents like a Mortgage Statement, Utility bills, Bank Statements, or other qualifying items. Both residency proofs must show the same name and address, be dated within 3090 days, and come from two different sources.

Bring the Application for Driver License or Identification Card (DL14A) if you have it, but obtaining it at the DPS is recommended. Bring the Eligible Parent Instructor you registered with the TDLR, along with $16 in cash, credit, check, or money order for the Learner License Application fee.
