Despite appearances Jane Austen’s Emma is a revolutionary work, which set new standards in its time, which also provided Austen with the opportunity to experiment with speech and how it is represented. John Mullan explores why this is so.

John Mullan is Lord Northcliffe Professor of Modern English Literature at University College London. He has previously edited editions of Daniel Defoe's Roxana and Samuel Johnson's The Lives of the Poets for Oxford World's Classics, as well as Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility and the new fifth edition of Emma.
