Week 1 Menu for Baby Starting Solid Foods

Follow
Baby-Led Weaning with Katie Ferraro

This video is about introducing solid foods to your 6monthold baby, specifically with 5 easy and safe finger foods that they can start selffeeding. The host of the video, Katie Ferraro, is a Registered Dietitian specializing in babyled weaning and a mom of 7 children @babyledweanteam. She shares her expertise on how to safely and effectively feed your baby in her weekly videos on YouTube.

First, Katie talks about how babies can eat more foods than we give them credit for, and waiting too long between introducing new foods can actually slow down their progress in becoming independent eaters. She then proceeds to show viewers how to prep and cook 5 safe foods for babies to selffeed in week 1 of starting solid foods.

The first food she covers is apples, which can be a choking risk if given raw. She demonstrates how to prepare soft pieces of peeled, cooked apple using a poaching technique that makes it safe for babies to eat. The cooked apples can be seasoned with nutmeg or cinnamon and served to the baby in a bowl.

Next, Katie talks about cauliflower, a great first vegetable to introduce to babies. She explains how to cut the florets properly to create a builtin handle for babies to pick up the cooked cauliflower with their whole hand or palmar grasp. She suggests using oil to coat the cauliflower florets before seasoning them with any nosalt seasoning like paprika or garlic powder. The florets can then be baked in the oven at 425 degrees Fahrenheit for 20 minutes or until they become golden and soft. Once cooled, the florets can be placed in a suction bowl for the baby to pick up and enjoy.

The other three foods that Katie covers in the video include buckwheat, beef (specifically, chuck roast), and egg. She also provides a link to download a printable with the menu for these 5 foods plus 5 more, including basic preparation, cooking instructions, and how to serve them to your 6monthold baby.

Throughout the video, Katie emphasizes that babies need lots of time to learn how to eat and may need to see a food 10 or 15 times before they like or accept it. She also encourages parents to offer different varieties and colors of foods to their babies to mix up their diet and introduce them to new flavors and textures.
