VW Panoramic Roof Drain Maintenance

Victorian Automotive Chamber of Commerce | VACC

It seems that across the Volkswagen Group of vehicles from about 2016 onwards use a similar design for the panoramic roof system. There is a movable glass panel in the front and a fixed glass panel over the rear seats. There seem to be four drain holes to allow water to drain to the ground, one in each corner. At the end of these tubes are small flaps which are designed to allow water to drain out and not let road grime or insects into the tubes.

If there is a blockage, water may back up the tube and will fill up the channels of the roof mechanism. The seals between the vehicle roof, the sun / panoramic roof and the headlining do not seem to be designed to deal with this amount of water could results in water entering the cabin.

To avoid this situation the drain tubes are scheduled to be cleaned at each service. However don't use compressed air in an attempt to unblock the drain tubes as you might dislodge the hoses from their fittings.

This is recommended Tiguan, Toaureg, Q5, Q7 and many other similar vehicles in the Volkswagen Group.
