Tor, also called The Onion Router, is the anonymous network of volunteeroperated servers that can be accessed only with the Tor Browser.

When you use it to access any website, your traffic enters the Onion network, goes through at least two random nodes and then leaves through a third random exit node instead of traveling directly to a destination website.

Speaking of VPN, it sends your traffic through a single remote server, encrypting it all the way so no one can see what you do online.

So both VPN and Tor protect your Internet traffic and your IP address.

What about the differences?

The key disadvantage of Tor is that there’s always a risk that the volunteers running the network aren’t trustworthy. You never know who you trust to keep your online communications private. In theory, a single person or organization can own thousands of Tor nodes to spy on users’ traffic.

What is more, VPNs are easier to use and also generally faster than Tor since messages pass through only one VPN server instead of three Tor nodes. Also, VPN protects ALL your connections, while Tor protects only those on the Onion network.
