Ukraine. Israel/Palestine. Some conflicts dominate the news cycle, while others pass by barely noticed Sudan, Myanmar, Congo, just to name a few. But the most violent war of the past decade was in a place many have never heard of: Tigray, in northern Ethiopia.

In just 2 short years between 2021 and 2022, a brutal struggle was fought between the Ethiopian government and the Tigrayan people. At least half a million people lost their lives.

But Tigray used to be known for more than just conflict. It's the home of Axum, an ancient city that could be considered the beginning of Ethiopia. It's also supposedly the place where the Ark of the Covenant is held, which is said to hold the 10 Commandments. Intense.

No one wants to visit this place. I decided to go for it.
