Vernal Pool Biodiversity Workshop by Kiley Briggs

Vernal pools are not just breeding grounds for early spring amphibians, they are biodiversity hot spots and their presence in a forested landscape has a strong influence on the wildlife present in the woods, even thousands of feet away from the pools themselves. From fingernail clams and predaceous diving beetles, and from Wood Frogs to Jefferson Salamanders, many woodland species depend on these remarkable habitats that dry up every summer. While we had to cancel our annual vernal pool workshop with the Vermont Land Trust this year due to the novel coronavirus, Kiley went ahead and did the workshop all by himself and produced this great educational video about some of the animals that spend all or parts of their lives in vernal pools. This video also makes a great educational resource for parents and teachers looking for online learning opportunities for their children and students and is appropriate for just about anybody, from age five all the way up past a hundred and five.
