Understanding Compressor Wiring

Follow
David Jones

There are many Air Conditioning and Heat Pump brands in the market but one common component is the compressor. Most use the Copeland Compressor which usually has 3 terminals, L1, L2 which are your line power coming in line side load, and T1, T2 which are your load or power going out to your outdoor blower motor. Rheem, Goodman, Trane, Carrier, Lennox, Tempstar and most other off brand units all use the same style of compressor which makes wiring easier to understand across different manufactures. It is important to take a picture of your wiring before performing any work, this will help you understand where the wires are supposed to be reconnected correctly. It is also important to remember that most capacitors are very similar with the same terminals, which usually include Common, Herm and Fan.
