Birds & Sounds of Nature

A very small and ornate hummingbird with a strong, clear band on the croup. The beautiful plumage of the adult male includes an orange crest with long orange feathers and dark green tips extending from the cheeks to the shoulders, a white croup and a strong orange beak with black tips. Females do not have these decorations, are green on the back and white on the belly with a contrasting rustcolored throat, beige croup and a more dull beak. It is found in a variety of humid forest habitats, from floodplain forests to tepui forests. It feeds on nectar and can most often be found in flowering trees, where it feeds discreetly, stealing nectar from the territory of other hummingbirds. More common and more widespread than other small hummingbirds found in the same region.
