AUSTRALIA’S Taronga Zoo has celebrated its first successful breeding of adorable shortbeaked echidna in nearly 30 years. Keepers at the Sydney zoo are monitoring the progress of three healthy young echidna known as puggles and their firsttime mothers: Ganyi, Spike and Pitpa. A puggle hatches after ten days and its mother carries it in a pouchlike skin for up to two months, until it begins to develop spines. It is then deposited in a specially constructed nursery burrow, with the mother returning to feed it every three to six days.
