Prosperity, along with the horrific dangers of the Newfoundland seal fishery, were a reality by the late 1700's. Newfoundland's population stood at about 20,000, but soon exploded. This led William Carson to fight for a representative system of self government; he achieved it in 1832.
By the late 1800's, new opportunities arose when the Labrador whale fishery, along with the development of the Newfoundland Railway ("the Newfie Bullet" as it was called), provided still more employment possibilities.
