The PPP Preacher
The story of Pastor Rudolph Brooks Jr. is far from a holy Christmas tale. This DC preacher found himself in hot water after scamming the federal government of roughly one and a half Million in Covid19 PPP loans.

What’s a PPP?
Here’s the quick background on the Paycheck Protection Program, or PPP for short. This was part of the Covid19 relief package passed in 2020 that provided billions of dollars in aid to businesses.

Rudolph the Entrepreneur
When Brooks wasn’t sharing the gospel, he was busy running two other businesses. At least that's what he wanted the State of Maryland to think. Brooks operated Cars Direct, Madaro LLC, and Kingdom Tabernacle of Restoration.

The Scam
On May 9, 2020, Brooks submitted an application on behalf of Cars Direct for a PPP loan. Brooks had to show proof of payroll from 2019, 2020, or the past 12 months to apply for PPP. According to the forms he submitted, Cars Direct paid $622,635 per month in payroll expenses—but things got even crazier.

The Spend
Unlike most Americans, Brooks was living the high life during the pandemic. On May 12th of 2020 that roughly one and a half million landed in the Cars Direct bank account. Here’s a fun fact.

Loan Rejection
You may be wondering why the Small Business Administration would ever approve a crazy loan request like this. Unlike a traditional secured or unsecured loan, the PPP didn’t require a credit check or background verification.

The Cars
Cars Direct was registered with the state of Maryland as a used car lot. As expected, plenty of car dealers often buy their inventory from auctions. Plenty of Auctions sell repossessed cars, salvage titled cars, and former government cars.

The Baltimore Residence
In late 2020, Brooks transferred funds from the Cars Direct account to a titling company in Baltimore. That’s when he used around a hundred fifty grand to buy a house in the city.

Government Notice
The FDIC launched an investigation into Brook's loan applications in July of 2020. This is the same government entity that insures the money in your bank up to $250 grand!

Aftermath
Brooks faces 20 years in federal prison and is currently standing trial. If found guilty, he likely faces the maximum sentence due to the nature of his crime. Many legitimate business owners were denied PPP loans due to funding availability.
