Unrecorded write offs showing as HPI clear is a big issue but the car with the 3 mileage issues, 2 salvage auction appearances and had been used as a taxi was a surprise even for me.

Buying a repaired Cat S car or Cat N car can be completely fine if you know in advance and the repair work has been carried out to a good standard but it should be cheaper as a result and you SHOULD know what you're buying. There is no requirement for insurers to declare their writeoffs currently which means not all of them do (it can be a costly and timeconsuming business) this means thousands of cars like these are being sold perfectly legally as HPI clear but in fact have been subject to a previous writeoff.
