With so many incredible national parks, you might overlook Theodore Roosevelt National Park. That's a mistake, and we can show you why. Teddy Roosevelt is an incredible place to backpack.

Way out west in North Dakota, Theodore Roosevelt National Park is as beautiful as it is rugged. We were excited to backpack the Achenbach Loop over a two day trip in the backcountry, but we didn't know exactly what to expect. We found ourselves exploring the varied terrain and marveling at the picturesque landscape. We encountered more bison than people and found stunning seclusion in the grasslands of the buttes. In the end, Teddy Roosevelt ended up being one of our most wild and unique adventures to date.

Between the wildlife, rough ground, and navigation, the Achenbach Loop is not recommended for those very new to backpacking. As somewhat experienced backcountry hikers, we found multiple challenges to keep us on our toes. Still, with the right gear and a little experience, you'll find making this journey to be more than worthwhile.
