The mirror video, where Bunny the dog has an existential crisis, is one of the videos that many people claim is the best evidence that dogs can talk with buttons. My original goal was to use this video to talk about some of the really fascinating studies that have been done regarding canine cognition and self awareness. But this video gave me a really weird vibe. So I took a closer look…

From a scientific evidentiary aspect, this video is great, because it isn’t edited and we can clearly see Bunny’s mom press two individual buttons. “Who.” And “This.” If we rewind and zoom in… Bunny the dog only presses one button. The button for “this.” Bunny never presses the “who” button. Yet we hear “who” and are told she said “who this.” The video evidence here is clear, and so is the science.

Only a few animal species have passed the mirror selfrecognition test, including great apes, dolphins, elephants, and even some birds like magpies. But no dog has ever passed the mirror selfrecognition test. Dogs react to mirrors the same way most animals do – as if it is another member of their species. They quickly learn to ignore mirrors or in some cases, use them as tools.

I’ve now looked at three videos that were suggested by people who strongly disagree with my original take on dogs talking with buttons and What About Bunny. Two of the videos were heavily edited and the third appears to be staged or doctored. These videos quite simply would not hold up to a rigorous peerreview if they were part of an academic study.

But wait… isn’t Bunny the dog part of an academic study? Yes but… there are some things we need to consider. For starters, the study is funded by the button company itself. And one of the lead researchers is the company’s Founder and CEO. Anyone can register their pet for this study. As long as they buy the buttons. Participants are also encouraged to share their stories on social media.
