Researchers have long sought to communicate with animals, with mixed results. Recently, I was asked to watch and react to viral videos showing pets like Bunny the talking dog and BilliSpeaks the talking cat using fluent pet buttons to speak English with their owners.

Everyone wants to know, are these talking cat and dog videos real? While What About Bunny and Billi the cat speaking English might seem like a dream come true for pet lovers, what does science say? Is BilliSpeaks real? Do fluent pet buttons work? My contention, as a biologist who specializes in animal behavior, is that there is a simpler explanation behind these fluent pet videos. What About Bunny and BilliSpeaks have been trained to push buttons in order to receive attention from their owner. Additionally, the owners display some well known biases that researchers take great care to avoid. Specifically, anthropomorphic bias, which is the tendency to assign human ideas, traits, and intentions to animals.

For example, when BilliSpeaks presses the button for “look” and then sticks her head in her crate, her owner assumes this means the "talking cat" is saying she wants to go outside for a walk. How can the owner be sure? What if BilliSpeaks wanted her owner to look inside the crate?
