Launched in 1880 by the Oregon Railway and Navigation Company, the SS Columbia was the first ship equipped with electric lights and the first commercial installation of Thomas Edison's new light bulb. After a 27year career and surviving the San Francisco earthquake of 1906, the Columbia sank in 1907 after she collided with the steam schooner San Pedro in the fog.
