When one thinks of destinations for train travel Sri Lanka is not on the top or even on most people's list, a shame because this small island nation is home to some of the most scenic and well preserved railways on the planet. In many places it seems time stands still as trains as still controlled by tokens and semaphore signals, a system that is the envy of any heritage railway but even better, its all still real! Our trip today will be on Sri Lanka's first railway, the mainline which runs from the countries capital in Colombo to the upcountry city of Kandy. We will travel on the double track high speed commuter line and then onto the twisty mountain railway into the Allagala mountain range.
