The Essential First Step: Teaching Your LGD Where to Look for Treats

Follow
Benson Ranch Livestock Guardian Dog Training

The first step in the training process should be to decide upon an area you plan to use for training sessions, if you plan to move the dog somewhere to train. The next step is to deliver treats as you plan to in your training sessions, but with no criteria at all: this is taught as the first trained skill. I teach dogs to take treats from my hand as well as to look for treats in other areas. In this video I teach the pups to take treats from my hand and to look to the floor for treats.

The pups in the video are Rosemary and Basil, my Great Pyrenees pups that are now established on the ranch, and the Ever Green pups. This litter of three pups arrived to the ranch only days ago, so they demonstrate some of the insecurity and confusion of this transitional time for them. All of this is important for me to keep in mind in order to set them up for success. This training session taught me a lot about how to do that in the future.
