LGD Training: How to Use Why Dogs Do Things to Teach New Skills

Follow
Benson Ranch Livestock Guardian Dog Training

A dog's responsibility to himself is to meet his own needs in some way. In stopping a dog's behavior, if that need is not met in doing what an owner has asked the dog to do, he may indeed stop the behavior at that moment. However, he is likely to repeat the behavior at other times because there is still something he needs. Stopping a dog's behavior while not meeting the dog's needs often produces other undesirable behaviors because the dog is trying to cope with the stress of frustration and confusion. Humans control every resource a dog has and we are capable of complex reasoning, which dogs cannot do. The fastest way to a confident, trustworthy LGD is to meet his needs at every step in ways that also support their human partner.
