In 1984 the Colombian team came to the Tour de France for the second time, after the organization opened the race and allowed amateur cyclists to ride. Pilas Varta sponsored the team of the 3 colors to which the fan had little faith, there was talk that the Tour would be great for them. Upon reaching stage 17 Lucho Herrera had shown himself in that Tour with 2 second places, in stage 11 mountain day in the Pyrenees where Robert Millar was the winner and stage 16 a time trial where he could only be surpassed by Laurent Figon winner from the 1983 tour.
