THE DIFFERENT STAGES OF SOLVING SEPARATION ANXIETY

Separation anxiety is one of the most complex and difficult behavioral issues to work through with a dog!

I get hundreds of messages a week on my social platforms asking me how to work through separation anxiety and the honest answer is....

... it DEPENDS!

You see, every case of separation anxiety is different. There are numerous genetic & environmental factors that contribute to a dog developing separation anxiety & a number of different ways to work through this behavioral problem.

Also, “separation anxiety” doesn’t mean the same thing for every dog! As I explain in this video, there are varying “levels” of severity of your dog’s anxiety you have to work through.

As a recap, here are the different “levels” working through separation anxiety:

1⃣ The most basic level Your dog is anxious about you leaving as soon as he gets in the crate

2⃣ Your dog is anxious about you leaving while you are in the same room as him

3⃣ Your dog is anxious when he sees you leaving the house

4⃣ Your dog is anxious while you are gone

Between steps, you can measure how long your dog can stay alone without getting anxious, and working to increase that time from 5 minutes to 10 min, 20, etc.

As you work on this with your dog, here are some additional tips that have allowed my clients to successfully eliminate this behavioral issue:

✅ Crate train your dog!

✅ Associate the crate with positivity by giving your dog chewing objects & feeding him in the crate so he begins to see it as his safe place where he can relax while you’re gone.

✅ Put your dog in the crate while you are HOME and work to increase the time he can stay in there without exhibiting stress signals so he doesn't associate crate time with being left alone.

✅ Record your dog when you leave so you can identify when he begins to exhibit signs of anxiety & identify a pattern.

✅ Don’t make hellos and goodbyes a big deal!

✅ When you get home, make your dog calm down, "sit" & "wait" before he can come out of the crate and then "sit" immediately once he gets out of the crate. Being calm & wellbehaved is what allows him to come out and be with you, not pacing/barking/whining.
