When are allergies not allergies? How do you know if your dog's itchy skin is just because of his food or environment and not deeply seated immune issues? What if I told you that you might be just 30 days away from a dog who is no longer itchy? Stay tuned for the 30 day itch fix!

So I picked up this trick from a great holistic vet about 15 years ago. One of my dogs was nonstop itchy and it was so bad, there were patches of hair loss and her ears were all crusty. I thought it was mange so imagine my surprise when it went away in just 30 days and never came back. Since then, I've had two dogs develop allergies, only to find out it really wasn't allergies at all. And in 30 days, their itching stopped and their skin and coats went from patchy, scabby messes to healthy and shiny. OK, so this isn't a miracle cure … but it works really well for a lot of dogs. And there are just 3 simple steps you need to do for 30 days.

OK, step 1 is a therapeutic dose of fish or any other marine oil. I don't like pulling wild fish, krill and squid from the oceans, since we're killing the oceans at an alarming rate. So green lipped mussel oil works well as a replacement and it's sustainable.

Now normally, you would give your dog about 1500 mg of fish oil per 20 pounds of body weight. I want you to double this. And if you're using green lipped mussel oil, double that amount. And then add a good daily squirt of organic MCT oil without lauric acid. And you're doing to do that for 30 days.

Step 2, give your dog a really high quality probiotic, twice a day. I recommend Protect or Gut Guard because they contain hardy probiotics like Bacillus subtilis that can easily survive the harsh gut environment. Most probiotics are too fragile to make it through but the soil based probiotics in these products forms a protective spore to survive the stomach acids and make it to the colon where they can start working. Give either one of these twice daily for 30 days but I would use Gut Guard if your dog has a history of digestive upset. And by the way, if you like this video please let me know in the comments below.

And step 3 is to shampoo your dog. A lot. For the first week, bathe your dog every second day or so. After that, you can move to every third or fourth day and gradually increase the amount of time between baths. But if your dog gets more itchy at any point, pop him in the tub for a bath. Now, the quality of shampoo really matters here and I'm a big fan of 4Legger shampoos. They're organic, completely natural with no harmful ingredients and, best of all, they lather up and rinse out really, really well. You could also try an enzymatic shampoo but I always prefer natural products that are free of chemicals.

After 30 days, most dogs will see a huge, if not a complete reduction of allergy symptoms. So, how does something so easy work so well?

Well, first, the omega3 fats in fish oil are very antiinflammatory. A lot of the time, itchy skin is just inflammation and not allergies … so adding a good amount of fats to the diet will help calm inflamed, itchy skin. You have to be careful with fish oil because too much EPA from marine oils can cause bleeding disorders. So if your dog has a history of bleeding disorders, you might want to check with your vet or use GLM oil since it contains other antiinflammatory fats, not just EPA. Now while we're talking about inflammation, this is why you also need to give your dog probiotics. Dogs with unbalanced or leaky guts can produce less of an enzyme that breaks down histamine, which is a major cause of itchy skin. So double up on the probiotics for 30 days to help rebuild a healthy gut, and avoid fermented foods, which can be high in histamines.

And finally, let's talk about the bathing. Now, bathing your dog that frequently is not something you want to do long term … it can strip oils from the skin and interfere with the colonies of bacteria living there. But, bathing also washes off any allergy triggers that are sticking to your dog and making her miserable! I'm actually allergic to dogs and horses and I develop hives when I handle them too much … and nothing takes care of those hives better than just scrubbing that area! So if your dog is struggling with itchy skin, then break out the shampoo and start scrubbing for the next 30 days … then after that, you can bathe much less often. So that's the super easy, 30 day itchy dog fix! Try it out for your dog and let me know in the comments how it works.
