Teaching your dog to settle on a mat while you're in the kitchen is a great way to continue to practice this behavior. Settle on a mat is where your dog lays down on a mat when cued and relaxes, chills and eventually falls asleep. Once trained you can use settle on a mat to take your dog with you anywhere and everywhere.
