Surgical technologists prepare operating rooms, arrange equipment, and help doctors during surgery. They are also known as operating room technicians. Surgical technologists have several roles and responsibilities, including:

Preparing the operating room for surgery
Sterilize equipment and make sure there are adequate supplies
Ready patients for surgery
Help surgeons and doctors during surgery
Take and maintain an inventory of supplies.
After the operation is complete, surgical techs may apply bandages and other dressings to the patient. They also trans patients in between rooms.

In 1999, the Bureau of Labor Statistics recorded $27,560 as the average base salary. By 2019, average base salaries were recorded at $50,110. Wages grew by $22,550 (or $1,127 yearly) from 19992019. The estimated 2020 average base salary would be $51,238, using $1,127 as the average yearly income. If trends were to continue, by 2029, the average base salary would be $61,385.

The job market for surgical techs has grown since 1999. In 1999, there were 64,810 employed surgical techs. By 2019, there were 109,000 employed surgical techs. From 1999 2019, there was a growth of 44,190 employed surgical techs (2,210 per year). The government is predicting a 7% growth in surgical techs over the next ten years. By 2029, they are predicting 116,630 employed surgical techs.

A small number of states regulate surgical techs. To get into this occupation, you typically need an associate's degree or certificate from an accredited surgical technology program. There are about 500 accredited surgical technology programs. Community colleges, vocational schools, universities, and hospitals all offer these kinds of programs.
