In this video, we are counting down the top 10 facts about the Stabyhouns that you might not know.

A Quick Overview:
Group: Sporting Dogs
Weight: 45 to 50 pounds
Height: 19 to 20 inches tall at the shoulder
Life Expectancy: 13 to 14 years

The Stabyhoun originated in the northeastern region of the Netherlands, where he was used as an allaround hunting and watchdog. His name is believed to be derived from the Dutch words for "stand by me dog." He's an excellent retriever, especially from water, so if you have a pool or live near a lake, he'll be in seventh heaven. Like most sporting breeds, he's friendly, tolerant, and willing to please. In addition to hunting, he enjoys participating in dog sports such as agility, flyball, and obedience.

Historically, the Stabyhoun was an allaround working dog for a farmer that might be only able to afford and support a single dog that was required to be an allaround able worker that shared the home. Apart from hunting, these dogs were used to guard property and to catch rats, moles, and bunzing. This versatility is still reflected in the breed today. It is also this lack of a working specialization, the Stabij's generalization an allrounder but not an expert at any particular skill that caused the breed to not be as soughtafter traditionally.

The Stabyhoun has a gentle disposition. This breed is friendly, sensitive, intelligent, peaceful, patient, and willing to please, but may be stubborn on occasion. The Stabyhoun exhibits great tolerance of children and other animals. With steady yet gentle training, this breed will be obedient and devoted to its owner. Stabyhouns should never be vicious or snappy. The Stabyhoun loves spending time with his people and is chummy with children and other pets. Begin training early to take advantage of his intelligence and desire to be with you.
