Rector Luc Sels: "An international university also benefits its own region"

The opening of academic year 20232024 was all about internationalisation. In his opening speech, Rector Luc Sels elaborated on what it means to want to be a truly international university. He outlined how we are already living up to this ambition today, why exactly this means so much to us, and what challenges lie ahead.

"Science knows no boundaries," said the Rector. "Or, more accurately, it should know no boundaries. However, it is increasingly subject to boundaries in a world of rapid geopolitical change that is also divided into haves and havenots in terms of scientific capacity."

"The ambition to be a truly international university is essentially not about who or what we are, but about the ability to fulfil our core mission as fully as possible: in, for and with tomorrow's society, both here and elsewhere."
