Sneezeweed A great Plant for Texas Pollinators

Basin Sneezeweed botanical name is Helenium amarum var. badium

Basin Sneezeweed is also known as Brown Bitterweed, or Yellowdicks but many people just call them Sneezeweed

Sneezeweed is a Native Texas annual plant in the Asteraceae or Sunflower Family. There are several varieties of sneezeweed. One is solid yellow and one other, Brown Bitterweed, is yellow with brown centers. Basin Sneezeweed or Brown Bitterweed has showy yellow flowers with brown centers as you can see in the video. All sorts of pollinators just love it! Contrary to its name, the plant does not produce a pollen to make you sneeze. No, the reason it is named Sneeze weed is because a type of snuff was once made from the plant. When it was dried, crushed and inhaled, Sneezeweed promoted sneezing, in order to “rid the body of evil spirits”. Listen carefully as Texas pollinators buzz with delight on Basin Sneezeweed flowers on this May 2021 day. There are a lot of birds singing too.
