Should you assign your patent or other IP? (Part 1 of 2: For Owners and Creators)

This Video Takes an Inventor or Creator Point of View
(Part 2 is the point of view of a business owner or investor)
Of course, if you want to know what the other side in an assignment is thinking, watch both!

If you are an inventor, investor, or business owner this 2part series is important for you because there are a variety of factors that determine if or when you should assign your invention to an entity (such as an LLC or Incorporation).

The two biggest mistakes I see regularly are:

1. An inventor unnecessarily creates an entity and assigns their patent (or other intellectual property ("IP") ) to it. This forces them to spend money keeping the entity in "goodstaniding" and compliance with other formalities (documents and meetings) that vary from statetostate and entitybyentity.

2. An inventor, business owner or investor either use a Form assignment (that can be guaranteed to have irrelevant provisions and often ones that run contrary to the understanding of the inventor, investor, or business owner), or are too rigid in their assignment.

This video covers the factors you should weigh when you're thinking about assigning your patent, copyright, trademark, or other intellectual property.
