Great Smoky Mountains Association is pleased to have the opportunity to explore the roots of Appalachian music through the Sepia Tones podcast miniseries. In this short video, learn more about the fascinating conversations hosts Dr. William Turner and Dr. Ted Olson have had with their guests. Sepia Tones: Exploring Black Appalachian Music is part of GSMA’s Smoky Mountain Air podcast and can be found on major audio streaming services.

In 2021, Great Smoky Mountains Association invited Dr. William Turner and Dr. Ted Olson—two wellestablished experts on Black Appalachian history and Appalachian music traditions respectively—to present a sixpart podcast miniseries called Sepia Tones: Exploring Black Appalachian Music.

Distributed through the GSMA podcast Smoky Mountain Air and produced by the GSMA Creative Team in collaboration with the African American Experiences in the Smokies project at Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Sepia Tones uses the powerful contemporary storytelling tool of the podcast miniseries to share an engaging blend of archival recordings, live performances, and interviews with distinguished musicians and experts discussing the many Black roots and branches of Southern Appalachian music.
