A juvenile grey seal was found entangled in some plastic litter by a team from the Marine Conservation Society who were ironically out on a beach clean at the time. Luckily one of the team is also a trained BDMLR Marine Mammal Medic and with help he was able to safely and successfully catch the animal and cut the rubbish free.

Cases like this really highlight how important it is to clean up our coasts and seas as much as we can to prevent this from happening. There are many organised beach clean events around the country each year, but you don't have to wait for one local to you to get involved if out for a walk yourself you can take a bag and clean up along the way too. Even a small loop of fishing line can kill an animal, so every piece picked up is potentially several lives saved from suffering and death, as material like this can last up to 500 years in the environment.
