I found snow in June! Join me on a scenic motorcycle ride across Grand Mesa, the largest flat top mountain in the world. Enjoy the stunning views, and let me know in the comments which was your favourite!

Grand Mesa is a breathtaking destination located in western Colorado. Standing tall at over 10,000 feet (3000m) and 500 square miles (800km), it is the largest flattopped mountain in the world. The area is characterized by its vast forests, pristine lakes, and majestic peaks, making it a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. One of the highlights of Grand Mesa is scenic Highway 65, which traverses the mountain, offering aweinspiring views and access numerous recreational areas. Whether you’re interested in hiking, fishing, camping, winter sports or just taking in the sights along its scenic, twisty roads, there’s something for everyone here! Don’t forget to check out the visitor’s center near the top and say hello to the friendly rangers!

Some tips from my ride there:

If you are planning on doing a scenic drive or motorcycle ride on Highway 65, I recommend including the rocky canyon section east of the 70 freeway. It has steep canyon walls soaring into the air on one side of the road, and a fast flowing river on the other. There are lots of good sized pull offs to stop and take in the views along the way.

Depending on time of the year, there is a ranger observatory on the rim of the mesa not far from the visitor center. It is accessible via a 10 mile (16km) road (may have unpaved sections). I was not able to access this road due to remaining snow in the area, despite it being June when I visited!

When I spoke with the ranger, he recommended visiting in mid to end of July. Apparently there are really beautiful wildflower blooms in the area around that time.

If you are interested in history and frontier life, be sure to include enough time to stop in Pioneer town to visit the local museum and historical sights there. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to stop by during my visit. Next time!
