We brought our RV to Quartzsite in Arizona and stayed offgrid for 12 nights on BLM land. It was our first time boondocking!

Did you know that boondocking is dispersed camping on public land? We always wanted to try it, but hesitated because we didn’t know where to start. We have a big toy hauler RV and we didn’t want to get stuck somewhere or be in the wrong spot by mistake. After chatting with people at the Xcapers BASH meetup about boondocking, we decided to take the leap and join a group going to Quartzsite, Arizona. It also helped that we had just finished our solar panel upgrade, so we were excited to see how it would work out!

We stayed on Plomosa road, about 10 minutes north of Quartzsite. It was very big rig friendly and we were able to get in and our with no issues. We were there during the RV show, so we got to see some of that as well. In general it was busy in the area at that time of year, with lots of RVs scattered around all of the dispersed camping areas. If you want solitude, there are definitely quieter areas in Arizona than Quartzsite in the winter. It was perfect for us as first time boondockers though, so we were very happy to be there!

We finally got to use our water bladder, which allowed us to top up our water supply midway through our stay. After we left, we stopped by the RV Relief service station in Quartzsite to dump our very full black and grey tanks. I would highly recommend their service, it was very clean and big rig friendly, with everything you need to resupply dump service, potable water, propane and ice.
