"People come down here because they want to be around other people. That's a simple thing. We live in cities because we are excited about being around people who are different from us, and we want to be around big crowds." – Mark Wallace, president & CEO, Detroit Riverfront Conservancy
This year the Detroit River Conservancy marks two decades of transforming the riverfront, investing more than $200 million in the revitalization, which in turn has generated more than $2 billion in public and private investment.
The riverfront now draws more than 3.5 million visitors annually, and the #DetroitRiverwalk has been voted the nation’s best in #USAToday’s Readers’ Choice Awards for the third year in a row.
Critical to it all is a healthy riverfront ecosystem that has been thoughtfully reclaimed and maintained. Wallace shares his insights into the obstacles faced and improvements achieved along the shoreline.
