With a baby on the way and a few rowdy pets, it’s time for a safety gate at the top of these stairs. I didn’t want one of those ugly plastic or metal ones sold at the local megamart, so I made this shaker style door out of big box lumber and some MDF panels to match the stairwell and banister. Having a hallway nearby and wanting to avoid traffic jams required double action saloon spring hinges, which then required figuring out how to avoid the door bumping into the handrail.
