Rust in soils – What happens when microorganisms breathe iron?

Department D-USYS, ETH Zurich

The ERCfunded research project IRMIDYN (Iron mineral dynamics in soils and sediments: Moving the frontier toward in‐situ studies) has been a major part of the work conducted by the Soil Chemistry Group in DUSYS since the project’s start in 2018. Recently, Prof. Ruben Kretzschmar and his team worked with independent Filmmaker Markus Tischner (Frisbee Medien, Germany) to produce a 14minute outreach film about IRMIDYN. The film shows the team‘s research activities in the laboratory and at one of the field sites in the German Wadden Sea. It explains their new approach to study iron mineral transformations in soils and sediments and the relevance for understanding biogeochemical cycles.
