Between 1954 and 1975, about 30,000 Newfoundlanders and Labradorians left their outport homes and moved into larger towns and settlements, known as growth centres. They did this under governmentrun resettlement programs. In just two decades, more than 250 villages disappeared. Some had been around for centuries.
