Ram Pump Drive Pipe Size

Talking about drive pipe size and how high our ramp pump can move water. (Answer: 41.5 feet!)

Correction: In this video I say that if your drive pipe is too small, you will suck air. This could be true but also may not. Upon further reflection, it happened to us because we had a 3/4” ram pump, a 3/4” drive pipe, and a 5/8” garden hose hooked to extend the 3/4” drive pipe upstream. We had installed a stand pipe down in the 3/4” section, and I’m now realizing the reason we continually had air is because the 5/8” line was too small, so we sucked air through that stand pipe.

If the ENTIRE drive pipe was too small, but the end completely submerged, I believe you wouldn’t necessarily have air but rather just a flow rate that would be insufficient to lift the waste valve. Again, the important point is that your drive pipe size matches your ram pump size. Comment with questions or comments!
