I Review the Ram 1500 Ecodiesel 3L v6 Diesel Engine as a Diesel mechanic and discuss the history of the Eco diesel engine and talk about why this diesel engine in the RAM 1500 has a negative reputation. I discuss the top 3 issues with the second gen Ecodiesel engine, leaking EGR coolers, Bottom end bearing failures and the EPA emission recall, I look at fuel economy, engine specs, reliability and engine performance.

I hope everyone is having a great weekend. with the final 2023 Ecodiesel trucks being sold as new trucks I figured it was time to revisit the infamous 3l ecodiesel engine that truly shook up the 1500 truck segment.

the 3L ecodiesel came from the italian engine maker VM motori and made its debut in the 2011 jeep grand Cherokee.

eventually Chrysler would bring the second gen 3L Eco diesel over to north America and bring put in the ram 1500 trucks. at first this looked like a wonderful idea and the 3L ecodiesel engine was highly praised and won awards for its power, torque and fuel economy.

but eventually people caught on that this Eco diesel engine was not as reliable as people had hoped. the first issue was the constant emission reliated failures. Clogged DPF's were common and other emission related engine lights.

The first major issue was the cracked EGR coolers that were constantly failing and eventually ram had to release a Recall due to potential fire hazard.

The second major issues and the one that would worry me the most as a buyer or owner is the bottom end failures. the Second gen Eco diesel seemed to spit out rod bearings and this was due to the crankshaft actually flexing during heavy load.

to me this is a strong signal that this diesel engine is simply not built to withstand the duty cycles and work load of a pick up truck. the engine was built for the passenger vehicle market and it shows.

the last major issues was the EPA emission Scandal and emission recall. the engines were emitting too much NOX gases into the atmosphere and the EPA fined chrysler 300 million dollars. all truck had to be recalled and have software updates.

this software update resulted in lower fuel economy, less acceleration and lower engine power. leaving owners disjointed.

there are a number of other issues with this engine that keeps going. overall in my opinion these engines deserve the bad rep they get because they were not meant for the pick up truck application and were unreliable.
