What is a gummy smile and how is it treated? Now gummy smile is a condition where when you smile even normally or even broadly your upper gums are visible now this can be very disconcerting. An ideal smile is where your upper lip covers at least about 1/4 of your upper teeth . But in gummy smile what happens is your upper lip is way up and your complete teeth is seen and in addition to the upper teeth we also see the gums and that's why we call it as a gummy smile. Now how is it treated depends upon what is causing the gummy smile . Gummy smile can be due to many reasons one of the most common reasons is overactivity of your upper lip muscles. If your upper lip muscles are overactive it contracts more and it shows your gums that is one of the most common reasons. And if that is the main reason for gummy smile it can be treated with a very simple technique called as botox injections where we put a injection called as botolinum toxin into the muscles of your your upper lip so that the contraction is reduced and your gummy smile is treated sually this injection is given every 4 to 6 months as an outpatient procedure and there is absolut. Usually no downtime after this procedure and usually you can see the results within one week of the injections. Now if the reason for gummy smile is something called as a vertical maxillary excess. Now vertical maxillary excess is a condition where you upper jaw is too long. Now when your jaw itself is very long your upper lip cannot cover your gums and that's why when you smile you have a gummy smile. So in those scenarios just giving a botox injection won't work we'll have to do some bony procedure. And this is where we do a corrective jaw surgery or something that we call as a maxillary setback and impaction procedure where we cut your upper jaw and take a slice out of the upper jaw and push your teeth upwards. So what happens when we do that is we are correcting the vertical length of your upper jaw your teeth gets pushed up and when you smile the gums no more are visible. So that is a treatment for a gummy smile which is permanent in nature.
