For the first time ever, the surface of a pulsar has been mapped using NASA's NICER Xray telescope. NASA's Neutron star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER) made the first surface map of the pulsar PSR J0030+0451, a millisecond pulsar located 1100 lightyears away in the constellation Pisces. But the surface maps don't look like the traditional magnetic dipole model we're used to. Instead, two or three Xray hotspots were all found in the pulsar's south polar region!
