In this first lesson, Russ explains and demos thoroughly how important the individual levels of the limbs in your playing are, and what you present to the microphones in the studio. To have a proper mix between the instruments of your drums is the goal here. After the introduction, you get alternating live audio examples of correct and incorrect mixes on the drums and overhead microphones.

Russ lays down the roles of the bass drum, snare drum and the hihat, with the hihat having the function of motion in the groove.
