Capitol Land Trust

Pigeon guillemots are mediumsized seabirds that, when breeding, are black with white wing patches and eyecatching red feet and inner mouth lining. These attractive birds rely on healthy shoreline habitat for raising their young and are used as an indicator species as the health of their populations tell us important information about the health of Puget Sound.

Adults seek burrows in coastal bluffs for nesting and will feed very close to the nest site in shallow water. Main prey items in our area of south Puget Sound include fish like gunnels and sculpin. Without healthy eelgrass beds and nearshore habitat, the guillemots would struggle to feed their newly hatched chicks.

Here at CLT we’re proud to prioritize shoreline conservation, and with the help of many partners, have conserved over 16 miles of Puget Sound shoreline!

Only one #BirdOfTheWeek video left for the season! Be on the lookout next Friday on our social media accounts and YouTube for the latest video. We hope you enjoy learning about the amazing diversity of feathered friends benefitting from local land conservation! Mike Melton #PigeonGuillemot
