Part 2: ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR | How to Lecture in Higher Education

Follow
Kent Lofgren

Hi! I'm Kent Lofgren, a higher education teacher for many years. I've been dedicated to building and delivering quality lectures to students on all levels on campus and online.

For me, a typical lecture is given to large groups of students to provide information or knowledge about a particular topic. I almost always use presentation slides, i.e., PowerPoint or other visual aids to help deliver the content.

I use the lecture typically as just one part of a course alongside other teaching methods such as seminars, group work, and individual tasks. Although I will not talk so much about those methods, it's important to remind ourselves that lecturing is always done in combination with other forms of teaching and learning.

I'm the first to admit that I'm far from being the perfect teacher. One of the things that I struggle with is planning and executing wellstructured and organized lessons to ensure that my students follow along and understand the material. I tend to drift off and start talking about anecdotes or side notes that are too far away from the main topic. So, I try to avoid that.
