What is Pantsir Missile System?

The Pantsir missile system was a family of selfpropelled, mediumrange surfacetoair missile systems. PantsirS1 is the first version and is a combined short to medium range surfacetoair missile and antiaircraft artillery weapon system produced by KBP of Tula, Russia. The system is a further development of 2K22 Tunguska and represents the latest air defence technology by using phased array radars for both target acquisition and tracking. Although more are planned to made later into 2019, only 112 of the 200 made continue to operate due to newer, more efficent models being made.
The PantsirS1 was designed to provide point air defence of military/industrial/administrative installations against aircraft, helicopters, precision munitions, cruise missiles and UAVsand to provide additional protection to air defence units from enemy air attacks employing precision munitions especially at the low to extremely low ranges.

What does this mean for India?

Pakistan has decided to buy Russianmade Pantsir Missile System from Moscow. Pantsir is a mediumrange surfacetoair missile and antiaircraft artillery weapon system. Pakistan is now planning to send a delegation to Moscow to finalise the deal and also have an arrangement for training defence personnel to Pantsir Missile System.

Pakistan is buying the latest and modernised weapons system to counter India. Pakistan is eyeing to procure tanks to antiaircraft guns and surfacetoair missile system from Russia,” an Indian Defence Ministry official, aware of these developments, told to Zee News. As per an earlier report, Pakistan has drawn up a plan to also procure 360 T90 tanks from Russia to bolster its combat power along the border with India
