The Pacific eLearning Program is an exciting project designed to help improve science knowledge and confidence for teachers of year 10 students in Vanuatu, Solomon Islands, Samoa and Cook Islands.

For many students across the Pacific Islands, science is taught to them by nonspecialist teachers. Many of these teachers have requested access to more locally relevant teaching and learning resources.

At Nanogirl Labs we specialise in using humancentred design to build science education programs that are inclusive of local knowledge and incorporate accessible equipment and materials.

Through a collaboration with Catalpa International for the eLearning platform and Wintec for the professional development design we are building 100 different science lessons covering a range of topics across biology, chemistry and physics.

This program has been built in close collaboration with participating governments and local teachers thanks to funding from the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
Aligned with Pacific education priorities this project is designed to help increase young people's scientific knowledge and problem solving skills while encouraging active participation that incorporates local knowledge and practices.

By delivering through an Elearning platform, we are able to scale and deliver this content across urban and rural regions. Long term these resources will be handed over to the local governments involved to help hundreds of teachers across the Pacific.

With strong evidence that coastal communities throughout the Pacific will need to adapt to a changing climate our Nanogirl lesson plans in our Pacific eLearning Program help to bring context to the scienific theory taught in classrooms. This video shows a couple of examples that we use to build models to help explain the role mangrove ecosystems play in stopping coastal erosion and to monitor environmental change.
