They are nocturnal and are among the most mysterious birds. They are considered wise, and because of their silent flight, they are compared to night ghosts. They got the name because of the tufts of feathers on the head, which can raise, lower or press tightly. However, these "ears" are not hearing organs. The real ears of an owl are two large, asymmetrically spaced holes on the sides of the head.
With its ears and bright orange color of the iris of the eyes, the longeared owl surprisingly resembles a reduced copy of the Eurasian eagleowl .
