Office Crest Painting Timelapse

This video shows the painting of a large crest on the wall of my office at Northwich Air Cadets.

Images taken using Tomtom Bandit action camera and its fantastic timelapse feature! Took about 13,000 images over the course of the project.

Camera was set to take an image every 10 seconds. I ended up using every other image and the video plays at 25 FPS. So 25 frames x 20 seconds = 500 real seconds (8 ish minutes) per video second.

Photos were then renamed and watermarked using a combination of Excel, Bulk Rename Utility and Faststone Image Resizer. The latter two are fantastic free applications and deal with large amounts of images without breaking a sweat.

Final video was then made using Kdenlive, which has a new feature allowing you to insert "slideshows". Give it a folder of images, tell it how long each image should be displayed for, add any transitions and then done. Much easier than using VirtualDub, which I tried initially.

The actual painting was straightforward. I first bought the paints from B and Q, which was a case of colour matching and having mixed the blue and yellow colours, then a standard black. I then projected the image and pencilled in every line, then painted.

I did the black last from the recommendation of a friend, any mistakes (going over the lines) with the colours could be corrected with the black last.

Happy overall, needs touching up and a few white spots filling in at some point, but bulk of the work done!
